Get Informed - All About St. Raymond's Society

Our Mission is to support mothers who have chosen life for their child, taking particular care to continue support after the baby is born.  We provide resources families need to become self-reliant and we prepare them to give their child the security of a stable home.

Our Mission

How We Began

Most organizations that help single moms don't start their story with "Two bald guys walk into a restaurant...", but ours does.  Founder, Mike Hentges, was greatly involved in pro-life activities including the March for Life in Washington D.C.  On the bus ride home from that event in 2003, he felt God giving him a very important question to answer.  If the law were changed today and abortion was illegal, how many women would need help bringing their child into the world?  As the law stands today, how many women need our help now? Mike knew his perspective, and his involvement, in this mission were forever changed.  Over the next few years these questions lingered on his heart.  In 2006, Mike went on the same bus ride and the idea developed into having a House where women could go to get their family on the right track after giving birth.  Finally in 2009, God's call to do something was undeniable.  Mike confided in his friend, Steve Smith, during a lunch prayer meeting and Steve responded with, "What are we waiting for, let's go!"  For the next year, the two men began contacting local agencies to offer whatever support filled a gap in services.  They did everything from fill propane tanks to mentoring.  The vision became a reality when the House in Jefferson City opened in 2012, Columbia in 2014 and Rolla in 2016.  Due to the transfer of one of our original staff members, a house will open in Concord, CA in 2017.  As the organization has grown, there is no doubt that God's hand has guided it.  We are grateful for being trusted with this mission and honored to help many families in the future.

Who was St. Raymond and How We Got Our Name

Upon creating the organization, Co-Founder Mike Hentges, considered what to name it.  He wanted to honor his parents, Ray and Marilyn, who brought him into the world with love even though he was an unplanned pregnancy.  Mike wondered if there ever was a St. Raymond and went to the internet for more information.  He discovered that St. Raymond, who lived in the 1200's, is the patron saint of expectant mothers and midwives.  And so the organization was named.

Our Program - The 7 Components of Self-Sufficiency

All St. Raymond's Society clients set goals to work toward self-sufficiency.  This enables the women to make the best decisions for their family without outside influences which can often come with many strings attached.  The women work with an on-site, staff Client Services Coordinator to set goals, identify needs and develop daily schedules.  While incorporating spiritual growth in all areas of life, the goals and schedules are focused on seven areas of self-sufficiency:

  • Education

  • Employment

  • Parenting & Childcare

  • Housing

  • Lifeskills & Wellness

  • Transportation

  • Budgeting & Personal FInance

The most intensive service offered for women and children through St. Raymond's Society is The House, a transitional home for pregnant and parenting women.  Residents have the opportunity to make sustainable plans by saving money on living expenses and focusing on the seven areas of self-sufficiency.  It is our desire to help clients grow spiritually, as we believe faith and a strong relationship with God are the foundation upon which all areas of life could and should be built.  We are committed to honoring each client's spiritual journey by encouraging and facilitating a partnership with a mentor who will support client's spiritual development and connection with a local church home of the client's choosing. Staff and monthly reviews monitor progress, provide additional motivation and support goal setting.  With an average stay of 4 months, this home-like setting allows mothers to focus on their families' future and make lasting, positive changes.  Currently, we have Houses in Jefferson City, Columbia and Rolla, MO.  In 2016, a key staff person transferred to Concord, CA.  The pastors of New Hope Church in Concord were from central Missouri and had toured the Houses there.  They were so committed to the mission of SRS, they offered the use of a house on their church campus to be the fourth location. St. Raymond's House in Concord, CA opened in March of 2017.
